Counseling with Children

Therapist in Sunnyvale - Stacy O'Leary, LMFT

As a child counselor in Sunnyvale, I work with children of all ages. Counseling or therapy can be particularly effective for children, since they have had less time to get set in fixed patterns.

For older children, please see my page about therapy with teenagers.

EMDR Therapy with Children

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can help children heal from grief, loss, past traumas, and anxiety, including test anxiety and performance anxiety.

I began using EMDR therapy in 2011, and I have been amazed at how well EMDR works compared to traditional therapy.

EMDR therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach to healing from trauma, anxiety, grief, and many other issues.

Play Therapy & Counseling

In addition to EMDR therapy, I use a blend of therapeutic play, sandtray, artwork, and counseling. Play therapy allows children to use play in a therapeutic way to work through issues. Playing is often how younger children naturally resolve issues. While many adults think of play as meaningless or unimportant, play seems to be an important part of brain development.

Also, playing or being involved in an activity helps children feel more comfortable and more open to talking about issues, so I talk with children about issues while we play together. During play therapy sessions, I am usually on the floor playing with children and guiding the play in a therapeutic way.

EMDR therapy can be combined with play therapy, sandtray, and artwork. You can read my pages on sandtray and art therapy for more information about these techniques.

What Issues Can Be Addressed in Therapy?

Children come to therapy for many reasons:

  • Healing from past trauma

  • Healing from past or current difficulties

  • Processing grief and loss

  • Learning ways to reduce and cope with stress

  • Healing from anxiety

  • Ending or reducing test anxiety or performance anxiety

  • Resolving social difficulties and shyness

  • Increasing self-esteem and self-confidence

  • Finding better ways to express emotions

  • Increasing resilience and joy

With any person or any family, there are always areas that are strengths and areas that you want to change. I tend to focus both on what you want to change and on building from current strengths.

Confidentiality & Child Counseling

When anyone in the family suffers, it affects the whole family. It is very painful to see your child having difficulties. My approach is to involve the parents or guardians as much as possible; however, children also have a right to confidentiality. Often, children are okay with me sharing information with their parents. Other times, children need privacy in order to feel comfortable talking with me. Confidentiality is very important to me.

When I work with a child individually, I also meet with the parents to talk about the child’s progress and family dynamics.
