Finding a Therapist or Counselor

Finding or choosing a therapist can be confusing or difficult. Often, people are not sure where to start when looking for a therapist.

In Sunnyvale (and Silicon Valley), many therapists and counselors have websites. As you read a website, check in with yourself about whether that therapy approach fits for you. There are many approaches to therapy. It is important to find a therapist whose approach works for you.

It's often helpful to talk to several therapists on the phone and get a sense of their different approaches. Think about what questions would be most useful for you to ask. Is the therapist available to meet when you are available? Does the therapist have experience with the issues that you are dealing with? What approaches does the therapist use? Does the therapist only do short-term or long-term therapy (or does it vary depending on what the client wants)?

Also, give yourself permission to start with one therapist and switch if the therapy is not working for you. It's also okay to see several therapists and then choose which approach seems most helpful.

If possible, talk to friends or family members for recommendations. But keep in mind that what works for one person might not work for another person.

Therapy can make a huge difference in a person's life. I hope you find the right therapist for you.
