Solution-Focused Talk Therapy or Counseling
Solution-focused therapy or counseling can give you a chance to explore solutions to whatever you're struggling with. While I want to understand the problems, I also want to focus on the solutions that might work best for you.
In solution-focused talk therapy, we talk about the problems, your thoughts and emotions, your goals, and possible solutions.
Everyone has different needs in terms of what to focus on. As much as possible, I tailor my approach to fit each individual person.
I have the most experience working with people with the following issues.
Therapy for Solutions, Not Just Problems
I got interested in solution-focused therapy after getting disillusioned with standard talk therapy, where the problems are the focus. Not unsurprisingly, talking over and over about the problem did not seem to help people feel better.
Emotions Are Important
Talking about and feeling your emotions is very important. In solution-focused therapy, there is room to talk about the problem and how you feel about it. Finding and expressing your emotions can be a crucial part of therapy.
Sometimes, people worry initially that I won't be okay with their feelings or that I will be in too much pain listening to their experiences. I am very comfortable talking to people about painful feelings.
Solution-Focused Therapy Trainings
I've trained with several solution-focused therapists. I particularly love the hopefulness of solution-focused therapy/counseling.
I also think that training as a civil engineer has made me naturally solution-focused.
